Trench Crusade Rules Update: The Court of the Seven-Headed Serpent Gets Seven New Warband Variants
The forces of Hell are getting a major overhaul! The October Rules Review from the official Trench Crusade team focuses on the Court of the Seven-Headed Serpent, introducing a complete faction redesign for the upcoming 1.1 Rulebook and revealing seven new Warband Variants inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins.
For players who enjoy demonic warbands, forbidden sorcery and tactical battlefield manipulation, this is one of the most exciting developments in the evolving world of Trench Crusade.
Here's what you need to know about the new rules, the Sin Marker mechanic and the seven ways to unleash the power of the Inferno.
What Is the Court of the Seven-Headed Serpent?
The Court of the Seven-Headed Serpent represents the personal forces of the City of Dis. Unlike ordinary human armies, its warbands are composed of demonic half-breeds wielding archaic, reality-bending weapons and Goetic magic.
According to the official Trench Crusade lore, true demons are forbidden from walking upon Earth. Instead, the Court sends its half-breed servants to corrupt Creation and twist the laws of God through infernal sorcery.
This dark identity has always made the Court one of the most distinctive factions in the game. However, the developers wanted its gameplay to reflect its lore more closely, creating a warband that feels as diabolical to command as it does to face across the battlefield.
The result is a comprehensive redesign led by Brook Close, with contributions from several other designers.
1. Sin Markers: A New Way to Fuel Goetic Magic
One of the biggest changes in the upcoming 1.1 rules is the introduction of Sin Markers.
Previously, Court warbands fuelled their Goetic Powers by spending Blood Markers on eligible models. Although this represented mortal suffering feeding infernal spellcraft, it also created awkward gameplay situations, including difficulties when facing other Court warbands or the Black Grail.
The new system changes how this resource is generated and spent.
Friendly models with the DEMONIC keyword can now generate Sin Markers by performing actions that corrupt God's plan. These markers are then used to fuel Goetic Spells.
This creates a much stronger connection between the faction's lore and its battlefield mechanics. Instead of relying primarily on the suffering of mortal models, Court players will have new ways to generate infernal power through their warband's actions.
The seven new Warband Variants will each feature thematic ways of generating Sin, meaning that the choice of which Sin to follow will influence how your warband operates.
Players who prefer the previous resource-management decisions can still explore the general Court warband list, which retains the Mortal Suffering rule.
2. More Freedom in Warband Building
The redesign is not just about the seven Sins. The general Court warband list has also received significant updates.
Players will be able to field a Court warband without dedicating themselves to a specific Sin. This represents rebellious sorcerers, exiled nobles and other infernal forces operating without the official backing of a Serpent Head.
The updated general list includes new Battlekit options, additional Goetic Powers, a new Campaign Glory Item and a new Patron: the Diabolic Circle.
These additions aim to support a wider variety of strategies and give players more freedom when constructing their warbands.
The developers have also revised the roles of existing models.
The Desecrated Saint
The Desecrated Saint has been reworked to better represent its intended role as a walking monument to sin. Rather than functioning primarily as a large melee monster with an aura, it now helps nearby friendly DEMONIC models generate Sin Markers when they Activate.
This makes its battlefield presence relevant to the new resource system and gives players another way to build their strategy around positioning.
The Yoke Fiends
The humble Yoke Fiends are also receiving a change in identity. They now occupy a more elite infantry role, with the new Glory Lost ability replacing Hateful.
Each Sin Variant gives its Yoke Fiends a corresponding thematic version, combining a benefit with a drawback.
These changes demonstrate the broader design goal: individual units should contribute more clearly to the identity and tactical approach of their chosen warband.
3. The Seven New Warband Variants
The headline feature of the October Rules Review is the introduction of seven Warband Variants, each dedicated to one of the Seven Deadly Sins.
Every Variant brings its own thematic special rules, warband-building options, Battlekit, refreshed Goetic Powers and a Campaign Glory Item.
Here is the official overview of the seven paths.
Pride
Designed by Tuomas Pirinen, Pride focuses on ego-punishing gameplay. Players who enjoy positional tactics and exploiting battlefield interactions may find this Variant particularly rewarding.
Greed
Designed by Sammie Dae, Greed offers another distinct approach to commanding the Court. Its full tactical details are part of the new Variant rules.
Gluttony
Designed by Andy Chambers, Gluttony is highlighted by the developers as one of the more accessible Variants to play, making it an interesting option for players looking for a more straightforward entry into the redesigned faction.
Envy
Designed by Brook Close, Envy rewards players who can exploit seemingly unfavourable match-ups. It offers a different tactical challenge from the more direct approaches available to other Variants.
Lust
Designed by Brook Close, Lust introduces another Sin-specific set of rules and army-building choices within the redesigned Court.
Wrath
Designed by Brook Close, Wrath is identified as one of the easier Variants to play, offering a more approachable way to experience the new faction mechanics.
Sloth
Designed by Brook Close, Sloth features subtle manipulation of Activation order and arcane firepower designed around avoiding unnecessary effort.
Together, the seven Variants offer Court players significantly more ways to customise their warbands. Whether you prefer direct aggression, careful positioning or manipulating the flow of a battle, the new system aims to support a broader range of playstyles.
Importantly, the Court will remain a relatively advanced faction overall. The Variants are designed to let players choose how much complexity they want to embrace rather than removing the tactical depth that defines the Court.
4. When Will the New Court Rules Be Available?
According to the October Rules Review, the redesigned general Court warband list will be included in the Trench Crusade 1.1 Rulebook, with the physical rulebook and digital release planned for towards the end of November 2026.
The seven new Warband Variants are being presented separately as a PDF for community review and feedback.
The developers intend to collect player feedback, refine the Variants and release them alongside the 1.1 rules update, together with additional lore and designer commentary.
Further updates concerning Campaign Glory Items, the Goetic Warlock and Sin Eater Mercenaries are also planned for the digital rules.
Players can submit their feedback through the official Trench Crusade contact form by selecting the Rules Feedback option.
