Trench Crusade at SPIEL Essen 2026: The Crimson Chalice and Hobby Inspiration
SPIEL Essen 2026 brought Trench Crusade to Germany from 22–25 October, combining an introduction to the game with a showcase for its painting community. For anyone building a warband or planning a grimdark battlefield, the event offered plenty to follow beyond new products.
Trench Crusade and Archon Studio at Essen
The official programme placed Trench Crusade alongside Archon Studio at Hall 1, booth 1E211, with game demonstrations, miniatures and merchandise. It gave visitors a way to explore the setting through both gaming and the physical models.
For newcomers, a demonstration can turn an intimidating collection of rules and faction names into a practical first step. For experienced hobbyists, seeing miniatures together provides inspiration for their next painting or modelling project.
The Crimson Chalice Painting Competition
The centrepiece for painters was the Crimson Chalice, Trench Crusade’s first official painting competition. Its categories included Single Figure, Large Figure, Warband, Storytelling, Open and Young Guns for painters under 16.
In its September event announcement, the team reported more than 100 registered entries. That was an advance registration figure, rather than a final count of works displayed or judged.
By 25 October, the community was sharing the awards coverage and individual entries online. The appeal went beyond technical brushwork: colour choices, sculpted bases and the relationship between a miniature and its surroundings gave each piece a distinct identity.
Bring That Inspiration to Your Gaming Table
You do not need a competition entry to build a memorable scene. Try a limited palette across your warband and terrain, choose one focal point, and use smaller details to connect the models to their surroundings.
A ruined church can frame a pilgrim procession. A coastal gun and broken ship hulls can suggest a naval raid. Weathered brickwork, rusty steel and muddy paths can make separately purchased pieces feel like part of one battlefield.
For a playable board, balance atmosphere with access: leave room to move models, check base clearance and agree terrain effects with your opponent before the game.
